                                                                POSITION

therapeutic position are used to promote comfort of the client, client position change every 2 hours to prevent bed sores. when change client position following -

a. maintain proper body alignment.

b. supports all body parts.

c. avoid pressures especially over bony prominences by adequately padding these area.

d. use pillows, splints , foot boards protectors which are helpful in maintaining the position.

11.lithotomy position

1. prone position ; the client lies flat on the abdomen with head turned to one side .both arms rest in comfortable.

use                                                                                                       contraindicated

  • assess the hip joint.                                                  a.   client with respiration or spinal problems
  • assess the posterior thorax
  • any injury ,                                                               b  client with abdomen surgery 
  • after anesthesia to prevent aspiration 


2. supine position ; the client lies flat on back with legs extended and knees slightly flexed.
                           supine is horizontal position.
use 
  • for comfort of the client.
  • assessment of vital signs.
  • physical examination
  • after surgery of anterior portion of body.                                                  
                        
3. high fowler's ; in this client head is raised to  80 - 90 this position can be maintained by the back rest and additional pillow.
use                                                                                                          contraindication
  • to relieve dyspnoea                                                    a.   after brain and spinal surgery.
  • to relive tension on the abdomen sutures
  • to help in the drainage of the abdomen cavity
  • to relax the large muscles of the back and thigh.

4. dorsal recumbent position ; the client lies on his back with leg separated knees flexed and slows of the feet flat on the bed or table .
 use                                                                                                       contraindication
  • vulval and vaginal examination                a, this position should not use for abdominal assessment
  • rectal examination
  • for catheterization of the urinary bladder 

  5. standing position; the client stand erect.
use                                                                                   contraindication
  • to assess posture, balance and gait                     a. not use for weak, dizzy or unconscious client.
  • orthopedic examination
  • assessment of neurological examination.
 6. sitting position ; the client sit on chair,
use                                                                           contraindication
  •  visualization of upper body                       a. not use for weak, dizzy or unconscious client      
  • assess vital sign
  • lung can expansion full

7. lithotomy position ; the client lies supine with hips flexed and calves and heels parallel to the door. the buttocks are brought to the edge of the examination table and heels in stirrups.
use                                                                           contraindication
  • gynecological examination                           a. arthritis and joint deformity.
  • assessment of female genitalia , rectum and surgery 
8. knee - chest position ; the client lies prone on the knees and chest. the head is turned to one side with the cheeks on a pillow. a small pillow may be placed under the chest. arms are above the head or they may be flexed at the elbow and rest along the sides of the head.
use                                                                            contraindication
  • for sigmoidoscopy                                    a. arthritis and joint deformity.
  • as an postpartum client 
9. Trendelenburg position; the client lies supine with the head 30. to 40. lower than the feet or the foot of the bed may be elevated at 45. angle. the body of client is on an inclined plane and the legs hang downward over the end of the table.
use 
  • pelvic examination
  • postural drainage 
  • to promote venous return
